Where the salts come from

Groundwater, old chimney use and some building materials can introduce soluble salts into masonry and plaster. As moisture evaporates, the salts remain behind.

Why humidity matters

Hygroscopic salts absorb water vapour from the air. On a humid day the plaster can darken or give higher electrical meter readings without a fresh supply of liquid water entering the wall.

Drying alone may not remove the problem

Salts do not simply evaporate with the water. Heavily contaminated plaster may need removal or an appropriate replacement specification if the decorative surface is to remain stable.
